About The Misadventure Manual

Welcome to The Misadventure Manual — the outdoor blog dedicated to proving that sometimes the best adventures are the ones that go slightly, spectacularly wrong.

For over 45 years, I’ve been hiking too far, paddling the wrong direction, setting up camp after dark, questioning trail signs, pretending I know where I’m going, and discovering that duct tape truly cannot fix everything. Somewhere between backpacking trips, canoe adventures, campfire disasters, ultraruns, cliff jumps, wildlife encounters, flaming Jetboils, and hearing “How much further?” every five minutes, this blog was born.

This isn’t your perfectly polished outdoor influencer page where everyone summits mountains looking fresh and inspirational. This is the real outdoors:

  • The hike that was “only 3 more miles”

  • The canoe trip where one person stopped paddling 20 minutes ago

  • The GPS that confidently led us nowhere

  • The campsite setup that looked easier on YouTube

  • The gear failure at the absolute worst possible moment

  • The stories that become legendary the second you get home

  • At The Misadventure Manual, the outdoors are equal parts:

  • adventure

  • comedy

  • poor decision-making

  • unforgettable memories

  • and somehow surviving long enough to laugh about it later

You’ll find stories about:

  • Hiking mishaps

  • Backpacking chaos

  • Canoe trip disasters

  • Camping lessons learned the hard way

  • Gear fails

  • Funny trail conversations

  • Wildlife encounters

  • Outdoor “expertise” that probably shouldn’t be trusted

  • And the occasional accidental life lesson hidden between bug spray and bad weather

The goal is simple:
To celebrate the imperfect side of adventure and remind people that you don’t have to be a professional mountaineer, survival expert, or ultra-athlete to enjoy the outdoors. Sometimes the best memories come from the stories that almost didn’t go according to plan.

So grab your backpack, double-check your stove fuel, pretend you packed enough snacks, and join me for more outdoor misadventures

Because the best stories are rarely the smooth ones.
